MASON LONDON

The design for my beermat is really just a funny way of combining two of my strongest memories from of past World Cups. The mascot for Italia ‘90 is one of my earliest memories of the world cup, so for me it has come to symbolise the whole competition. I also love it as a design - the fact they didn't come up with a cute mascot but for some reason just limited themselves to their flag and a football I find hilarious, it's so functional - like some sort of brutalist mascot. Then the head butt is one of those crescendos of angst and emotion that appear every now and again in the World Cup, it really floors me to think about the emotion that must have overcome Zidane to head butt someone on the biggest stage in the world of football, when he knows he's being watched live by millions of people and can't possibly get away with it.
